Use it in good health? As of this moment, this is who I have blocked on DeviantArt, with four names removed. It is a shorter list than one might imagine. Somebody, mistakenly, argued that I must be a long time user of the forums in disguise, because I knew "exactly who to block" - doing so in a tone that suggested that this, somehow, would be a bad thing. No, I'm just me, and the secret of knowing "exactly who to block" is an easy one. It's as simple a matter as knowing right from wrong, having a reasonable degree of empathy for those who don't forfeit it, and not letting anybody's version of Political Correctness get in the way. If I see somebody acting like a jerk, I don't have to wait until he acts like a jerk toward me to know that he is a jerk, and not worth talking to. I'd lurk in the forums, watch somebody being himself, and without a single word, hit the button and send another pest out of my life before he ever has a chance to be in my life.

One name, I removed, because I blocked her as part of a joke that she knows about - long story - and I don't want that joke going viral, because people didn't understand. Another three names I removed because I'm wondering if I should have blocked them, at this point, and would like to go back for another look before doing anything that might encourage others to replicate an error I made.

I guess I could make this page "better" by including links and stories, but I've got better things to do with my time, and would rather forget than dwell on the annoying things and people I've encountered along the way. At this point, I don't remember why most of these people are on this list, and that's the beauty of it - I probably never will remember. There might be a few false positives - I did choose to err on the side of caution - but if you look around the forums, for a while, I think you'll find that there at most a few. Feel free to copy, paste and pass this list around, if you have faith in my judgement about such things. If not, no offense taken, course. I understand that there is an anonymously compiled "cyberbully" list being passed around, that people are taking at face value. Maybe the people on that list deserve to be there, maybe they don't, but either way, that strikes me as being a lot of trust to put in Mr. Nobody; how does one know that the list wasn't compiled by one of the trolls? If you have no idea of who I am, and are reacting to this list with skepticism, good for you. That's exactly the kind of healthy self-assertion that makes life a little saner. If you do know who I am, and are taking this list seriously, thank you for the trust. I'll always do my best to live up to it, however imperfect that best effort will sometimes be.

I would mention that some of the people on this list were put there for being Nazi apologists, and another for suggesting that I try to introduce some of the children visiting this page to movies in which some very wrong things were being done to children, so some of this does get serious and creepy, really creepy. But then, watching a white supremacist whine because yet another "mud person" doesn't want to talk to him, and then try to claim that blocking is a form of oppression, and that I'm not being sufficiently tolerant of his intolerance, throwing this particular tantrum while "sensitive" people rally to his support? That's funny - annoying, but funny.

What I find interesting about this list is that while those listed are a small minority of those one will find in the forums (and a far smaller minority of the users on the site), by removing these people from my virtual life, I've eliminated just about every aggravation I've ever had on DeviantArt. We're looking at a social network with well over 10 million users - far more people than there are in New York City - and the trolls on it would barely fill a medium sized Starbucks, apparently. Something to think about, perhaps, the next time the Internet seems like a cesspool; the floaters in it might look more numerous than they really are. Not that having floaters around is a great thing, but the cleanup might not be as hopeless as it first appeared to be, so get out the net and start scooping?

In other words, feel free to borrow this list, but give serious thought to compiling your own. You'll have cleared away the sludge before you know it.

I live in Chicago and am an adult.

I bring this up because I've noticed there are children on this site. If you're under the age of 18, please don't ask for a mutual friending. No disrespect intended, but that just looks and feels wrong. I hope you'll understand.

The usual background stuff - I studied Mathematics and Physics in undergrad, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering in grad school, and that might show in some of the critiques I'll write. Graduate school did me no favors financially - I'm stuck living below the poverty line. Also - yes, I really am Jewish; no, not all Jews have names like Abramowitz or Weiss, just the ones from Central and Eastern Europe; and no, I'm not going to apologize to you for that. I've noticed some of the Jew bashing on DA and no, I don't think it's cute or funny.

This, for the moment, is what I've decided to be the successor to my page on Flickr. No, I haven't been thrown off that network - my account still exists there - but I have seen what the new layout is going to be, and the resulting navigability issues are going to be severe enough that I felt that the time to move had come, really, before I'd even had the chance to really get going.

Most frustrating, but sometimes, all one can do is give up.

This isn't where I'll be posting my movie reviews, and given the nature of those reviews, you shouldn't want it to be. Note that my ID is movie-reviewer, not "movie-reviews" - which is not to say that this page will have nothing to do with movies. What you're often going to see are somewhat derivative works - not so derivative as to even approach a violation of copyright law - in which I do an homage to somebody else's style, or a variation on something he or she did. I don't have a paid account, so videos will have to go somewhere else, but you should expect to see some writing, at some point.

I said that you shouldn't wish to see my movie reviews on this page. There's a reason for that - to the best of my knowledge, DeviantArt doesn't offer blog cuts and for the kind of review I'll be doing, those are needed.

On my main blog, my focus will, as my nickname suggests, be on discussing movies, offering separate commentary for those who haven't seen the movie and are trying to decide whether or not to do so, and those who have and would like to see somebody do a free form after the fact ramble about it. So you see the problem - we probably won't have seen the same movies. What happens if, as you go to my blog post about one of the movies I've seen, you scroll over the entirety of the blog post I wrote about a movie that you didn't see? That's not going to be good.

These are reviews written by somebody who, while reasonably well educated, is not a movie geek, ones that I hope will be a little less pretentious than those written by a fellow resident of Chicago who once claimed that Iago, the parrot, was a stand-in for Israel, in Disney's Aladdin, which he said could be seen as an allegory about nuclear power. Please. On the other hand, there are many who could and will write about this subject with a far greater depth of knowledge, so there is a tradeoff.

Aladdin, 1992, image hosted elsewhere

No strange political or cultural agendas, no fear of being seen enjoying something that others say is too simple or not simple enough, just a sharing of a love (or dislike) of something for what it is. Plus some photos and essays, and grossly amateurish videos of my own, perhaps, elsewhere, as I said.

Your can follow my uploads to or my list of favorites on DeviantArt by e-mail, using Feedburner. A few pages are associated with this one, and will interlink with it and each other enough to be considered parts of a single site.
